Some university teachers prefer to record their lectures in advance so that students can familiarize themselves with the material before class. Then teachers can use the class time to help students to practice what they learned while watching or listening. Do you think this method of watching or listening before class is an effective way for students to learnwhy or why not?

E-learning has recently become one of the fastest-moving trends and aims to provide a configurable infrastructure that integrates learning material, tools, and services into a single solution to create and deliver training or educational content quickly, effectively, and economically. When it comes to what is an effective way for students to learn, in view of convenience and study efficiency, providing students with recorded lecturers before is an effective way.

 

For one thing, lecture recordings make it convenient for students to get access to lectures. Offering recordings of face-to-face lectures is an easy extension of a traditional course and is of practical importance, because it enables students who are absent from the regular face-to-face lectures to be able to improve their course grade by viewing the lectures online. Online on-demand video recordings of the face-to-face lectures are the best method for blind and partially blind students, in case they miss the lecture. Likewise, lecture recordings will also help students living far from campus to improve their time efficiency, so they can spend more time on doing exercising rather than on commuting.

 

For another, lecture recordings allow students to improve study efficiency. Unlike traditional face-to-face lectures, in which students could only listen to what the professor said for only once and may miss import knowledge, online-videos allow student to watch the videos again and again, allowing them to play back the part they do not understand. Meanwhile, lecture recordings allow student to focus on the content of the lecture rather than keeps them taking note like in traditional lecture, making them have a deeper understanding of knowledge.

 

Granted, some students will miss the lecture because they know the recordings will be uploaded; some may sit through lectures and presentations, but essentially take in very little since they know they have the chance to listen to the lecture again. All of these will have an adverse impact on their academic career. However, teachers could encourage ‘active learning’, the idea that students are actively engaged in the learning process rather than passively absorbing lectures, to make lectures ‘unmissable’, which involves discussion, problem solving, presentations, group work such as buzz groups, brainstorming, role plays, debates—anything that gets students interacting with each other and engaging with the lecture material.

 

In a nutshell, offering lecture recordings is a preferable way for universities to improve teaching excellence.
